When creating your first layer of pencil strokes, mix it up with a variety of different line weights. I use a mixture of dull and sharpened pencils as well as mechanical pencils. As you are creating each stroke, remember to press and then lift as you approach the area you want to highlight.
Steps
Erase the hairline and parts of the head covered by the hair once done. You should eventually have a line drawing with a good amount of details similar to the example above. If you want to create a shiny look or replicate harsh lighting, try to keep the highlights fairly clean. You can add more or less detail depending on the level of realism you are trying to achieve.
Straight and Wavy Hair for Men
Up until the areas where volumes of overlap, we can continue in this manner. Keep in mind that until the hair merges with other clumps of hair, it is often exposed to light. Given the number of shadows in these areas, our drawing strokes will be darker. Do not go too dark too soon, as it is easier to add dark tones than to remove them when drawing with pen. It’s a rather straightforward process to learn how to apply light and shade using a pen, but at times it could seem repetitive. An excellent idea is to take a break, relax for a bit, and then return to drawing with a renewed perspective.
Art Periods – A Detailed Look at the Art History Timeline
Add some loose small, and long hairs with your mechanical pencil for an extra touch of realism and fluidity. With your mechanical pencil, fill the locks with soft and small traces following the flow and movement of the hair. Apply more pressure and layers to the part right beside the neck and under the ear. Using your 4B pencil, darken the areas closer to the head and add some extra hairs on the top of the blended areas. This will give the illusion of depth and add extra texture to your hair. We are going to draw the “steps” and work with a round hairline.

Don't press too hard—hair is soft and shouldn't have a hard outline. Matthew Matthysen is an educated multidisciplinary artist and illustrator. He successfully completed his art degree at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa, majoring in art history and contemporary drawing. The focus of his thesis was to explore the philosophical implications of the macro and micro-universe on the human experience. Matthew uses diverse media, such as written and hands-on components, to explore various approaches that are on the border between philosophy and science.
Step 5: Draw the bottom
She is a self taught pencil portrait artist and Youtuber. An average human head contains around 150,000 strands of hair. First of all, you don’t need to spend 90% of your time meticulously drawing your subject’s hair.
When these groupings merge or overlap, there is always a sense of shadowing that develops as an effect of that overlapping. This is where we slowly shade and add in darker tones. Another important aspect to remember is that in the light moments of the hair the lines are thick and thin. With hair drawing, we want to develop the skill of how to shade hair. There are various hairstyle drawings one can do when learning how to draw hair, in this tutorial we will be doing a female curly hairstyle drawing. We don’t want to darken all of the hair at once, but to proceed with extreme caution and constantly refer to the reference image.
Afterwards you can gradually shade the line drawing in several lairs of strokes. Once you have the lighting down, start drawing boundary lines between groups of hair that appear to be overlapping. Decide where you want the light to fall and then outline those areas using the shadow lining technique.
Anime-Style Skin Coloring Tutorial
Use quick, sharp strokes that go inside from the outside of the hair outline. As a result, the area of the hair that curves around the back of the head and receives less light will now appear darker. Check the diagram and with your 4B pencil, darken the red areas.
Click the link at the bottom of this photo to see the full tutorial. With these different hairstyles, you can create the personality of your manga character. The hair can play a big part in making them appear shy, cute, confident, and more.
To get the most out of this lesson, take my free Mini-Course on the essential concepts of realistic drawing. These video lessons will give you a framework, or 'order of operations', for approaching drawings of any subject matter, including hair. Shade the whole haircut now, drawing curls all around. Make the general outline complete by drawing the hairline next to the ear.
If you want to add some variation to the hair texture, then try mixing up your pens with broader and finer types. Explosive —but not too much, curly hair is voluminous, hard to control and, many times, hard to comb! Fluffy, soft, playful and gorgeous, those are some adjectives we can think about for curly hair. • My first step was to draw the outline of the main lock (the one which will be the base of our drawing), following the direction in a S shape. Hair is a very important point of expression for our characters, so drawing hair exactly as we imagine it can be a real challenge. I try to break it down and think three-dimensionally and consider the volume and shape of the hair form with drawing hair.
Step 3: Adding Shading to the Right Side
It's totally understandable if you're feeling intimidated, but we've got you covered! We'll help you break the process down into manageable steps and add details one layer at a time to achieve realistic-looking hair in your drawings. Read on for a detailed guide on outlining, sketching, shading, highlighting, and more.
Step 14
Draw a line from the hairline to the back of the head to create the hair part (this can be center or to the side somewhere). Using the same rolling shapes as before, fill out the rest of the hair until you reach the back of the head. This can be anywhere (left, right, center), but it may help to look at a couple of photo references first.
Step 5: Draw the bottom
As the hair comes out of each overlapping moment it becomes lighter again and slowly flows into another moment of the hair grouping. Keep in mind the action we are using with our pen is light strokes with moments of harder strokes as we come to the shadowy areas. I love the look of the sketch and how the hair comes together in the final drawing. By the end of this tutorial, you, too, will have mastered the sleek ponytail with bangs.
And when I draw it, I like to give it a prickly, pointy, rough appearance. • I added some texture, following the direction of the curves. I also put in some irregularities around the edges to match the surface (B).
How to Draw Different Kinds of Hair: Short, Long, Straight, Wavy, and Curly
As you sketch, be careful to pay attention to this characteristic of the hair in the original image. As we concentrate on the hair tips, damaged hair normally has split ends. The hair does typically split in different ways, yet there are times when it is trimmed straight. With a hand motion for the splits and a delicate line drawn to a tip for the straight-cut moments, we can produce a range of these traits. Accentuating these minute details is essential for drawing life-like hairstyles.
Step 10
I also love how they include individual closeups of the curls. Examining our reference image again, we want to notice all the little fine, wispy hairs on the head. With your pen, you may very softly sketch these little stray hairs. This is a fantastic technique to mimic the way hair behaves in nature. To determine which areas should be shaded and which should be kept light, pay attention to how light falls across the hair.
Learning how to draw hair or more specifically drawing female hair is a tricky task because all hair is different. However, when we draw straight hair, our lines have slight curves. When we draw wavy hair, such as in this tutorial, we draw hair that has a twisting motion. The point is that we need to analyze the source image of the hair we draw and then apply the principles of lines to the shape. The best idea is to do an outline of the hair and then slowly apply lines in the different hair segments or shapes in the hair.

It's a fantastic tool for drawing hair because it can be used to pick out specific details, or to lighten larger areas of value. Watch this video tutorial on my three favorite kneaded eraser techniques for realistic drawing here. Learning how to draw hair can feel like an ever-changing, dauntingtask at first. Hair varies so much from hairstyle to hairstyle that it requires us to be flexible in our approach.
Many people go to art classes to learn the basics of creating facial features and drawing portraits. This guide should help you learn how to draw realistic hair perfectly. Near the top of the head, where the hairs emerge, we can also discern these little details. These darker spots are typically located in the parting line.
Inside the construction frame from the previous step begin drawing in some of the more organic shapes and folds of the hair. You can erase the construction lines as you go through them. Try and make the shading strokes in a way where they flow along the different hair clumps and folds.
Hair locks must somehow wrap the head following the curves of its surface. Both circles have a layer around them, but A looks more like a flat shape, whereas B looks to be more spherical. Each hair comes from a specific point and grows in a different direction. Even when the hair is very long, the gravitational force eventually brings it down.
To decide which details areimportant to include and which I can simplify or leave out of mydrawing. I want my pencil marks to be considered, conscious decisions. What we want to do now is go over our source image and take note of all the little wispy hairs around the head. These little rogue hairs can be drawn very lightly with our pens. This is a great way to give off the quality of how hair acts naturally.
Note that those areas are places where the light doesn’t hit directly or where the hair overlaps. Again, with your mechanical pencil or your 4B pencil, mark the hairline position very softly. For this section, we will use our 4B pencil, powdered graphite, brush, blending stump, and kneaded eraser. So, using the pen of your choice, trace over the graphite marks. If you want line variation then use a couple of technical pens with different-sized nibs or a brush pen. People are some of the most fascinating and difficult subjects to draw.
Don't miss the downloadable hair drawing tutorial infographic below, as well as this tutorial on how to draw a realistic braid. 3) The hair drawing must convincingly represent the elements of light and shadow on form (such as the highlight, half-tone and shadow). Toreach both of these goals, drawing every hair or curl that I see doesnot have to be a priority. Instead, part of my challenge will be tofigure out how to design what I see.
Historians date coffee’s arrival in Mexico to the late 18th century. The exact date when café de olla was first made is unknown. But what is known is that café de olla played a big part in the Mexican Revolution. Women revolutionaries, also known as adelitas, prepared café de olla for soldiers before they went off to battle. Charles Spencer just welcomed a new puppy to his family home, Althorp House, where he and the late Princess Diana moved as children. My daughter and one of her best friends have been going to their story hours for a few years and really love going.
Real Estate
Althorp is set on 13,000 acres, 550 of which are the house and gardens. Princess Diana originally wanted to move back to the property after her divorce from King Charles (then Prince Charles) but that sadly wasn't able to happen for security reasons. The Earl has been dedicatedly restoring the property ever since he took it over, and he and his wife Karen like to share updates from the historic house and grounds. But the Earl's followers got a glimpse of another adorable addition to the Northamptonshire estate on Wednesday, thanks to Althorp's Conservation Manager, Adey Greeno.

Prestige Princess performers are dressed in beautiful high quality costumes and wigs that they have specially made for their company. Along with Picaresca, below is a list of nine cafes throughout Los Angeles that have mastered café de olla. Café de olla literally translates to coffee from a pot, because traditionally the drink is brewed in a clay pot. "The police knew it wouldn’t work. I offered every other property that was suitable on the estate. I really felt it was the right decision for her. But she probably couldn't see it."

This is a party where you can relax, enjoy, and leave the work up to us. My daughter had a wonderful party with her best friends, the staff is so kind and helpful! We chose princess Ariel and the performer was fantastic , we all were impressed. “We definitely wanted to have items on the menu that catered to our community,” Hoyos said.
Everything about this location is wonderful; from the themed events to the amazing staff. My daughter has been to a few story nights and a couple day camps and has loved every minute of it. Even my son has joined in a couple times and fit right in.

So they created a syrup with traditional café de olla ingredients that they add to iced and hot lattes. “I’m Oaxaqueña, and in Oaxaca every day you start the day with café de olla,” said restaurant owner and chef Rocio Camacho of Rocio’s Mexican Kitchen. It's the latest insight into life on the stunning estate from Adey, who last week shared a new look at the grounds close to where Diana was buried which was quickly branded "beautiful" by fans. Since then, coffee, in particular café de olla, has become deeply rooted in Mexican culture. Most of the coffee in Mexico is produced in the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Veracruz and Puebla.
You can choose an awesome character to come to your kids party as well. My daughter had a great birthday party and everything was perfectly done. Hoyos grew up in Lincoln Heights and frequently visited El Huarachito with her family for its delicious food and café de olla. Now as a coffee shop owner, Hoyos, along with business partner Leo Abularach, serves a new interpretation of the nostalgic café de olla recipe. As more young Latinos begin to stake a claim in L.A.’s coffee world, coffee shops like Cruzita’s in Huntington Park and Picaresca in Boyle Heights are beginning to serve their own versions of café de olla.

In Southern California, a good café de olla is typically found at a Mexican restaurant like El Huarachito in Lincoln Heights, which has been in business for more than two decades. For Latino coffee shops, like La Monarca, café de olla is a menu staple that is enjoyed year-round. A caffeinated cup of coffee infused with cinnamon, piloncillo, anise, clove and a dash of grated orange peel — there’s never a bad time to drink café de olla. There’s a nostalgic joke among the Mexican diaspora that we enjoy hot liquids in parching weather, but the classic comfort drink is especially soothing during cold-weather months. For many first-generation Latinos, a sip takes them back to abuelita’s house. For others, café de olla reminds them of their home country — Mexico.
Once you close the door behind you and your party begins, you will be transported out of reality and into a scene right out of a storybook that you, your child, and your guests, will never forget. Stage 1: Empathize—Research Users' Needs
When designers aim for a minimum viable product (MVP)—a functional, marketable version of an app, for example—it allows for quicker iteration based on user feedback, rather than waiting for a "perfect" product. Design thinking leverages a flexible approach to problem solving, where solutions don’t have to be designed in a linear fashion. This allows teams to complete steps in any order they choose or delegate more time to certain steps over others based on their needs, making for possibly unique or innovative solutions. Additionally, design thinking encourages the sharing of ideas from multiple perspectives like designers, users and stakeholders to solve problems, making for various creative solutions that can arise.

This human-centered design process consists of five core stages Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test. At the end of the day, a true design process is not a set of Silicon Valley buzz words (extra points for alliteration). It is the ability to know how a process fits with scenarios like adjusting to a developer’s skillset, compromising a shorter timeline, or accommodating the goals of another team.
Students design and build prototypes using materials and tools like the ancient Egyptians had at their disposal. Students gain experience with the software/system design process, closely related to the engineering design process, to solve a problem. The lesson culminates in a hands-on experience with the design process as students simulate the remote control of a rover.

Design Thinking: Get Started with Prototyping
Once the initial concept is established, designers move on to the development stage. Here, they focus on refining and expanding their ideas to create a more detailed design. This involves exploring different variations, experimenting with color palettes, typography, and layout composition. In the conceptualization stage, designers gather information and brainstorm ideas to develop a clear direction for the design. This involves conducting research, understanding the target audience, and defining design goals and objectives.

Together, they lay the foundation for a user-centered design approach to ensure a structured and iterative development of the product's user experience. Applying the Interaction Design (IxD) process in real-world contexts requires navigating through its five stages, ideally without compromise. However, real-world projects often face time and financial constraints, which necessitates strategic trade-offs. Despite these challenges, it's crucial not to skimp on essential aspects like user research and testing. For instance, employing cost-effective methods such as paper prototyping can offer early insights into potential solutions, which helps to steer the design in the right direction.

The 5 Levels of Design Maturity: Where Is Your Business?.
At the feed (the end of a transaction), Venmo uses circle profile pictures that are, by convention, used to indicate people, green to indicate gains, and red to indicate losses. Light text in an input can afford that it is empty, and a colored rectangle can afford a click or a tap. Motion Design indicates temporal states of objects (loading, ephemerality, etc.) or shows spatially where we are within the product. The scope determines the set of features that are necessary for a feasible and impactful subset of the solution space.
Because of that, especially in digital design, designers are involved with measuring the design’s performance. However, many designers don’t have a problem to solve, so the very first step they see isn’t useful. It was only part of the solution, but if the idea had been rejected outright, or perhaps not even suggested, the company would have missed an important aspect of the solution. More importantly, we do this to frame our work when presented to a wider team. We see this becoming more and more necessary when students are learning product design through Dribbble [5], through mentorship, and even through academia.
So many companies say they’re “customer focused,” but lack a clear understanding of what really matters most to their customers in the context of their product or service. Design thinking puts the user front and center, with the Empathize stage dedicated to understanding and discovering user needs. Here, the focus is on speed and efficiency — you don’t want to invest a ton of time or resources into these solutions yet because you’re not sure they’re the best ones for the problem you’re trying to solve. You just need a functional, interactive prototype that can prove your concept.

But then we can make it a lot better through even just a few more iterations,” Eppinger said.
The 5 Stages in the Design Thinking Process
However, the design process can sometimes be overwhelming, with several stages and challenges to overcome. In this in-depth guide, we will explore the design process from concept to completion, providing valuable insights, techniques, and case studies to help you master the art of design. No matter what a project is about, whether it is application design, package design or chair design, it is important to understand the essence of it. During this stage, it is crucial to get as much information as possible about a product and its’ users. In my opinion, this stage is the most important in the design process, as all our further design decisions should be based on the facts and data we received at the research stage.

Let's dive into two case studies that highlight effective design processes. To enhance creativity, designers can adopt various techniques such as brainstorming, mind mapping, and mood boarding. These techniques help stimulate innovative thinking, facilitate idea generation, and foster a collaborative environment for sharing and refining concepts. To excel in the design process, designers need to leverage appropriate tools and techniques. Let's explore some essential aspects that contribute to effective designing.

Biomedical engineers design, create, and test health technology that measure all sorts of physical functions in the body, including heartbeat.
Stage 2 in the Design Thinking Process: Define the Problem and Interpret the Results
The finalization stage is where designers fine-tune the design, making necessary adjustments and improvements. This includes reviewing the design from different perspectives, considering feedback from colleagues or clients, and addressing any potential issues. Once the research is complete, designers can begin to conceptualize the design. They may sketch out different layouts, experiment with color schemes, and explore various typography options.

The value of UX (and the value of following the UX design process) boils down to creating products and services that people actually need and want to use. That translates into customer loyalty, higher conversion rates, increased sales and revenue and a competitive edge in your market. As you can see, each step in the UX design process is geared towards ensuring that the products you create are beneficial to your end users and built with their needs in mind. That’s the key to good UX and you can’t create successful products otherwise.
It is one thing to know what can go into a product, but its another thing to know what ought to go into a product. Essentially, it’s a common set of steps that creatives use to create products and processes that work. In the final lesson, you’ll step outside the classroom and into the real world.
Welcome to a course that doesn’t just teach design; it shapes the future of design innovation. The design sprint is a very structured version of design thinking that fits into the timeline of a sprint (a sprint is a short timeframe in which agile teams work to produce deliverables). Developed by Google Ventures, the design sprint seeks to fast-track innovation. While design thinking and agile teams share principles like iteration, user focus, and collaboration, they are neither interchangeable nor mutually exclusive. On the surface, design thinking frameworks look very different—they use alternative names and have different numbers of steps.
It’s where your product, design, or development teams evaluate the creative solutions they’ve come up with, to see how real users interact with them. Students are introduced to the concept and steps of the engineering design process and taught how to apply it. In small groups, students learn of their design challenge (improve a cast for a broken arm), brainstorm solutions, are given materials and create prototypes.
